When the reigning king Monivong died on 23 April 1941 the Governor-General of French Indochina, Jean Decoux, chose Norodom Sihanouk to succeed him. On 24 April Sihanouk's appointment as king was formalised by the Cambodian Crown Council, and his coronation ceremony took place on 3 May 1941.
